Fun Facts!
1.Folklore traditions involving guinea pigs are numerous; they are exchanged as gifts, used in customary social and religious ceremonies, and are frequently referenced in spoken metaphors. They also play a role in traditional healing rituals by folk doctors, or "curanderos", who use the animals to diagnose diseases such as jaundice, rheumatism, arthritis, and typhus. They are rubbed against the bodies of the sick, and are seen as a supernatural medium. Black guinea pigs are considered especially useful for diagnoses.
2. It is a known fact, that Queen Elisabeth I kept a Guinea Pig or two as pets.
3. While female Guinea Pigs are called Sows and the males Boars, a break in nomenclature names the young guinea pigs "pup's", instead of "piglet"s.
4.Guinea Pigs are crepuscular, which means they are most active during dawn and dusk, when it is hard for predators to spot them.
5.Guinea pigs have poor sense of sight, but well-developed senses of hearing and smell. Vocalization is the primary means of communication between members of the species.
